Forced to Pay Toll for Oil on Rails Across the Nation

New York reports that every railroad must pay $5 per mile as a royalty for the idea of dust suppression on rails using crude oil. James R. Nichol holds the patent on the principle, and multiple lines including Burlington, Pennsylvania, Illinois Central, Southern Pacific, and Santa Fe have paid under court rulings. A 22 mile Chicago to Downers Grove stretch cost $330, with royalties paid per line or per double track. The royalty is a one time payment, after which railroads may oil freely. East Africa introduces a new wood for pencils as U.S. cedar supplies wane.
