Fire Prevention Study Highlights Leading Fire Causes

The Actuarial Bureau reports matches and smoking as a major cause with about 27.9 million in 1929 losses, second only to exposure which exceeded 41 million. Other top causes include defective chimneys and flues, stoves and furnaces, electricity misuse, petroleum products, spontaneous ignition, and sparks on roofs totaling about 155 million dollars. Most of these fires are preventable, and strengthening building codes and fire fighting methods can cut the nation’s fire wastebill.
