Beque Becomes A Hero In Wartime Intrigue
In this wartime reminiscence, a sergeant recalls the promotion of a Valontaire to sergeant after sustaining grave injuries and the moral courage shown by Sub-Lieutenant Raoul d Aury de Bedon. The narrator admires the officer for discipline, strength, and inner beauty, while hinting at secret service plots, duels, and loyalties within the French and Anglo-Saxon military traditions. The piece moves toward a continuation, foreshadowing further encounters and revelations.
