Shipping bill to boost Port Aransas and Texas harbors
The new shipping bill, signed Sept 7, aims to develop Texas ports including Port Aransas, Freeport, Arthur and Beaumont and to expand Houston Ship Channel use. It creates authority for government or majority-owned firms to run coastwise and foreign lines, with $50 million appropriated. Texas interests and Rep. Rufus Hardy push for direct Texan benefits and faster port connections, especially to New York and South America.
