Early Library Honors Physician in Lockhart Texas

A red brick building near Lockhart’s square memorializes Dr Eugene Clark a pioneer physician who arrived in 1893 from New Orleans and built a saddlebag practice. After European study he died in New Orleans in 1898 at 36. His legacy includes a $10 000 gift for a public library with 6000 for the building and a trust fund for upkeep. The library, Texas’s first civic library, combines library and auditorium with a unique balcony reached by two spiral stairways.
