Navy Experts Say Long Ordeal Could Have Ended Sooner

Washington October 10 Officials of the Navy report that if the plane had been equipped with a high frequency short wave transmitter the crew could have kept constant contact with searchers for nine days, possibly preventing starvation and sinking. Navy radio experts say the loss might have been averted with standard gear and a wind driven generator providing 4000 volts for a 1000 watt transmitter. The P N nine lacked fixed antennas and relied on a wire dipole while aloft and had kite antennas for aloft transmission. A new diplomatic high frequency transmitter is now in use improving long distance comms.

Radio Nest Breaks 9 Mile Transmission Across Boston

A damaged antenna nest caused by birds disrupted radio reception for about nine miles in the Boston area. A loose fuse and broken aerial wires created a perched antenna effect, with ground wires completing a circuit and transmitting signals unexpectedly along the overhead lines. Local observers noted the unusual interference spanned a long coastal stretch, attributed to the nest’s influence on the antenna system.
