Slums Target of Campaign Disease Fight
The CDC launched a campaign to immunize preschool children against polio measles and other diseases amid fears of epidemics. It warns that slums with black children aged 1 through 4 show alarming under immunization while suburban children are at risk too. Federal funds for vaccines have fallen from 17 million in fiscal 1972 to 6.2 million this year, risking shortages. The drive involves private doctors and state health groups with goals to vaccinate 2.2 million additional preschoolers for polio and millions more for measles rubella diphtheria tetanus and other diseases.
