Prospects Dimmer For Comet Kohoutek
SAN FRANCISCO reports astronomer Ralph I. Palsson of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific says comet Kohoutek may not dazzle as a Christmas display. He notes the dusty nature reduces brightness by about 1.7 magnitudes but predicts a spectacular show for the next two months. The comet's orbit has become hyperbolic due to planetary gravity, delaying any future returns to millions of years.
