Two witnesses described the hotel balcony incident that led to Lee Tracy’s dismissal from MGM. Authorities said the actor broke his word by leaving Mexico. Irving Pichel, also in the film, recalled finding Tracy in a nude state when awakened Sunday to discuss a ticket purchase.
An American observer reported Burt Tracy appearing nude at a hotel balcony during a parade, with a blanket slipping off and him asleep after detaining the crowd’s anger. Pichel defended Tracy, while public prosecutor Cherla Aranda denounced Tracy’s claims as false.
Lee Tracy, the actor tied to a Mexico City balcony scene, has had his long-term MGM contract cancelled. Louis B. Mayer stated Tracy’s conduct was deplorable and unconnected him from the studio. Tracy apologized, claiming he merely joined a celebration. The firm also withdrew him from the Viva Ville film project.
In Decatur Alabama Judge W W Gallahan overruled a motion to quash a venire for the Heywood Patterson defense in the Scottsboro case. Joseph R Brodsky of New York argued that jurors were excluded solely because of race and color.
Customs inspectors seized approximately 1060 gallons of Belgian alcohol in San Antonio this week. The alcohol, intended for medicinal use, will be shared with government hospitals after a federal court order, potentially stocking the base hospital for a year or more. Other government hospitals may request portions as needed.
