Torrential rains slow American infantry in the Philippines as forces contend with a tenacious Japanese defense. Farther southeast, U S. troops in Mapia Islands tackle cleanup of enemy cemeteries while air activity declines due to the storm.
Forecast calls for cloudy skies with occasional rain Friday afternoon into Saturday. Saturday morning low around 46 degrees in San Antonio area. East Texas sees similar wet conditions with little temperature change through the period.
Rainey former president of the University of Texas told a state investigating committee that he had been influenced by what he called interlocking interests among boards of directors of state colleges. He said a committee of doctors named by the regents recommended Dr Chauncey D B Leake as administrative head of UT medical college and suggested study of governance, tenure and academic freedom. He cited doctors Vetrell Taylor Kiel Stone and others as part of dissension over Dr Spies and reported disputes over appointments and board attitudes toward administration.
London dispatch reports A F bombers guided by master bombers during a mass attack on German positions near Aachen. Picked crews coordinate strikes, round up strays, drop final bombs, photograph results, and ensure the mission remains on plan amid heavy combat conditions.
More than 3400 bombers supported Eisenhower in a winter offensive aimed at the Rhine, with 12 000 tons of explosives on German positions. American and British planes concentrated near Aachen and Gellenkirchen, raiding 12 towns and key highways while transport was strafed. Roads to Berlin and fronts in Poland, Hungary, and Italy are listed with distances.
SUPREME HEADQUARTERS announces the creation of new air commands for the Ninth, Sixth, and Seventh armies as Allied air power intensifies the western drive toward Berlin. The Twenty-ninth, Twelfth, and other TACs assign fighter bomber groups under Gen. Elwood R. Quesada and Brig. Gen. Otto Weyland to support Gen. Courtney Hy Heensy, Gen. George Patton, and Gen. Alexander M. Patch. Losses include five heavy bombers and 12 fighters missing amid heavy German resistance.
British and American armies push into German lines along the Maas and Rhine sectors. The U S First and Ninth Armies advance toward Duren as Patton's Third Army nears Metz, while Allied air power pounds German positions. Prisoner counts rise as German defenses crumble in the Nancy to Aachen corridor and along the Cologne plain.
The report describes a drizzly, cloudy Texas with temps from the lower 50s in South Texas to near freezing in the Panhandle and northern areas. Light snow in West Texas, rain forecast for Friday, and colder conditions near the New Mexico border. Central Texas mid 40s, Gulf Coast and Deep South in the upper 40s, Lubbock around 34, Abilene near 40, with sleet, snow, and fog reported in several counties.
