Supreme Court backs reinstatement for crossing picket lines case

The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that workers fired for refusing to cross fellow strikers picket lines are entitled to return to their jobs. In a California movers’ strike dispute, the court held unfair labor practices prevent arbitrary replacement during a strike. Unconditional reinstatement was deemed proper for the employees as they were victims of unfair labor practices by their employer. The case arose from Santa Maria where Teamsters campaigned in August 1967 and four International Van Lines employees were fired for not crossing lines.
