DDT Sprayed Across Pacific Island To Stop Typhus
On a Pacific island an entire area is being treated with DDT to combat disease-carrying insects. A Marine torpedo bomber fitted for spray operations releases a fine DDT mist over rubble strewn terrain, halting insect populations believed to contribute higher casualties than enemy fire in the war. The method uses a pinhole nozzle under each wing, spraying at 135 mph from 150 feet, covering roughly 400 acres with two quarts per acre, and may precede future landings to curb insect-borne disease before D day.
