Memorial Day Halts War Efforts Across Nation
Memorial Day 1942 brought a national pause as many plants and defense offices slowed or halted work for a three day holiday. Wreath ceremonies and patriotic events took precedence over production with some facilities converting to observances and others maintaining essential operations. A new munitions plant in Greenfield Massachusetts and navy shipyards faced reduced output and a 10 percent lag in civilian staffing, while cargo vessel programs and airframe plants planned three day shutdowns to honor the holiday. Secretary Hull and other officials remained on duty to coordinate international tensions.
