Death of famous radio star Jimmie Rodgers shakes nation

Jimmie Rodgers known as the Singing Brakeman dies at 35 in New York after a long illness. Born in Meridian Mississippi, he rose from roundhouses and campfires to national fame with railroad ballads and the guitar. Survived by widow Anita and father A W Rodgers, with funeral plans incomplete. He had recent ties to Kerrville and San Antonio, Texas, where fans followed his performances on KMAC.

Weather Tax Collections Reported Slow

CIV and school tax collections were reported slow with Priday noting totals of 968,404.02 and 6199.19 as due by end May. Deputy tax collector A B Stephens announced the figures and the role of the period in the overall collection effort.

Law Affects Come Try Pay Tax Amendment in Congress

Washington May 26 An amendment to the administration public works measure limits net loss carryovers to one year in income tax returns. The Ways and Means Committee approved the change as debate on the larger tax bill continued. The panel also studied testimony from J P Morgan and associates in a Senate Banking Committee investigation while proposing a 23 4 percent levy on general manufacturers sales, with exemptions for fod, clothing and medicines. Indicators suggested a close vote on the sales tax issue as party leaders sought to rally support amid Banking Committee scrutiny and fiscal policy battles.
