The Bank of France destroys damaged notes to prevent loss to dishonest workers. In 1910 it burned over 1,000,000 1000 franc notes and nearly 8,000,000 other notes, reprinting 1.6 billion francs. A two stage furnace converts paper to coke then ash, watched by regents, with each retort handling 820 pounds of notes over about 20 hours weekly.
