Schools in Debt Prompt Debate on Bond Plan
Dr Evans warns the year end figures leave the schools $30,000 in debt after expenses, with $141,016.17 borrowed, $11,480.48 sinking funds, and $174,410 in securities on hand. The district faces a May 27 payroll shortfall for teachers, while city tax receipts will cover notes held by banks. Mrs Cunningham supports the band bond, but attorney J D Childs questions using bonds to build intermediate high schools, urging a tax raise for salaries and delaying the bond issue. He argues the plan would disrupt seven grade elementary schools and push families to attend distant intermediate high schools, raising costs and risk.
