Gun Battle Lone Sailors Nabbed After Car Theft
Three of five Corpus sailors fleeing Pipe Creek in a stolen car after a running gun battle with Deputy Sheriff Lawrence Edwards of Bandera were being held in the city jail after arrests in the 1300 block of Cu lebra avenue. Radio Patrolman Joe Williams identified the car from a description and phoned in the arrests. The sailors, who had been drinking, offered no resistance. They were charged with assault to murder and theft of an auto. One said he lived in Pipe Creek, another in Bandera, and a third in Kentucky. A fourth and fifth youths remained unaccounted for. Deputy Edwards pursued the car, fired, and was forced to stop when a bullet damaged his radiator. The suspects were to be returned to Bandera for charges.
