Public Service Company Aids Army During 1917-18
The Public Service Company prepared for probable Army use as San Antonio emerged as a troop concentration point. It stockpiled poles, wire, transformers, and pipe, built a large 18,000 volt line to Camp Travis, and helped construct overhead electric systems in Kelly Field and Camp Travis at cost. The company expanded streetcar capacity, built thirty new cars, and extended lines to Brooks Field and Camp John Wise. It supplied balloon gas, built a balloon school, and laid gas mains, with monthly outputs reaching 400 000 cu ft at times. Government requests were met rapidly without disrupting civilian gas supply, and additional machinery was ordered to meet future public-utility needs. Total 1917 construction tied to military requirements exceeded 100,000 Dellawa.
