Strike plans paralyze war effort amid railway labor dispute
President Truman warns governmental seizure may be essential to protect citizen rights as a nationwide rail strike risks crippling transport. OMT Chief Johnson cautions a walkout could bring a perilous time in transportation, while Buford prefers no military use. The seizure order targets 337 carriers, with 250,000 workers directly involved and 1.4 million more affected. Railroads seek to negotiate, and legal questions loom over the Smith Connally act and seizure authority.
