Cisco Kid of Air Forces Holds Off Zeros With Gun Burst
Air base reports Sgt Herbert A Meyer of the 18th Army Air Force fought off a squadron of Zeros during a Biak strike. He kept firing from the hip as gun mounts failed, wrenching free and continuing to defend the tail until a 20 mm shell blistered the fuselage. He was wounded in the hip and chest but refused to yield, praised by Lt Raymond E Rogers for his steady nerve and skill. PMIDed in hospital, Meyer’s bravery boosted crew morale.
