General Pratt Warns U S Will Shield Caribbean Bases After War
Maj. Gen. H. Conger Pratt told a Pan American Round Table luncheon in St. Anthony's Tapestry Room that costly military and naval installations in Trinidad and other Caribbean bases will need U.S. protection after the war. Pratt, who was relieved in the Philippines in 1944 and sent to Trinidad in 1942, said fears of U-boat activity and Africa uncertainty once misled some to deem Trinidad critical, but those fears proved unfounded. Mexican Consul-General Carlos Arturo Calderon attended, stressing democracy at home while soldiers fight abroad.
