Heroic Lt Bill Best saves crew during Salerno ship disaster
Amid explosions on a burning transport ship off Salerno, First Lieutenant Bill Best of Pelham High and Lawrenceville Union College leads a rescue, helps wounded cooks to boats, and guides survivors as the vessel sinks. Despite chaos and danger, his actions earn praise as the battalion fights ashore, with Best later returning to shore to aid the wounded. His final note hints at discharge and a return to civilian work in journalism.
