New York May 10 Alfred E Smith testified before the U S senate inquiry for half an hour about his campaign finances for the Democratic presidential nomination. He said $103 410 arrived from the New York organization to the governor and $20 800 was expended. William F Kenny a New York building contractor contributed $70 000 of the receipts. Name and another donor provided $20 000 outright and $50 000 in loans. The heaviest outlay was $42 500 in California where Governor Smith lagged in the primary. A total of $3 500 was later returned. Van Name indicated the local Smith organization raised between $2 300 and $12 300 in Flint State. The Smith manager, a member of the New York Public Service Commission, testified no money was spent in southern states. About $7 000 was sent into the West for Utah Wyoming Nevada New Mexico Washington Oregon Montana Idaho. Also $38 000 went to Joseph F. Guffey in Pittsburgh for use in the primaries. Smith’s son faced questions about funds in Minnesota North Dakota and Maine. He said he had made no personal effort to secure the nomination in Houston and had contributed no funds from himself to the campaign organization. The leading Democratic nominee was not to be bound to leave his state for the convention in Houston. Secretary Hoover testified yesterday in Washington about his campaign being in friendly hands. Several offers were made to party leaders in New York and other states. (Continued on Lhyy 4 Cah, 3)
