Oklahoma City reports the first rainfall in a month brought drought relief and improved crop prospects. The storm dropped up to 2.68 inches at Bartlesville and refreshed livestock water supplies across most of the state.
The Associated Press reports twelve Texans died over the long weekend in drownings and highway accidents across multiple counties. Victims include W. Ragsdale of Santa Anna, J. C. Scarborough of Santa Anna High School, W. B. Brown of Rusk, Archie Henderson near Conroe, Victor M. Matthews of Stanton, Hugh S. Sarrels of Ri, Mike Vernal of Pasadena, and several student drownings in Lake Brownwood, Lake Kirby, and Lake Todd.
Shanghai dispatch reports heavy bombings along the South China coast by Japanese warplanes causing significant loss of life and property. Citizens are urged to evacuate inland as authorities label the raids reckless and aimed at breaking Chinese morale. Amoy sees increased naval and aerial activity as war moves inland. Officials deny Chiang Kai-Shek plans to relocate the government for the third time in 22 months.
Philadelphia detectives checked Delaware and Schuylkill river drownings amid a suspected insurance murder plot with about 100 victims. District Attorney Kelley planned exhumations to confirm Watson as a death cause. nine bodies have already been dug up with eight showing poison and one due to vehicular impact. Coroner Hersch was asked to list drowning victims with head injuries. Three suspects have been charged so far. Names announced include Lena Winkleman in law case involving her son-in-law Joseph Swartz, Louis Laverchio whose widow Rose Davis is charged with poisoning him, and Abraham Sherman whose widow Dora faces a death inquiry.
In Cesano di Roma on May 4, Mussolini and King Vittorio Emanuele observed Italian troops of the Eighty Second division in a 20 minute offensive drill.
