A local column attacks labor unions and political figures using labor issues to seek power. It argues unions seek city schools and administration control, warns against organizing bodies dictating public affairs, and cites Italy’s unions as a warning. It asserts the public must govern itself.
Passengers aboard Southern Pacific trains between New Orleans and San Antonio report views from car windows of idle ships and ferries along the river amid ongoing Marine strike activity. Seventeen idle barges and hulls drift near the Panther Dafsle ferry area, noted by observers.
The piece laments idle U S ships rotting along Texas coasts while British and Japanese vessels sail, blaming the La Follette shipping law for high crew wages and reduced American competitiveness. It argues to repeal the law as it harms U S trade and even touches on societal views of wealth and college life.
A student group at Chicaroa University proposes a pledge binding members to abstain from visiting their "best girl" during the current quarter, a move framed as restraint yet likely to stimulate courting as a social reaction. The pact disavows targeting coeds and cites education of those involved, noting the enduring pull of romance and social display in university life.
The article defends Secretary Hoover's proposal to create a national marketing board to coordinate buying and selling for producers and consumers. It argues this avoids paternalism or socialism, reduces forced price selling, and widens access to markets. It notes railroads aid distribution but cautions the scheme alone cannot solve the broader distribution problem.
A wartime notice states all married men stationed on the Rhine and their wives are ordered back to the U S by the war department. The item wryly notes fewer Rhine sightings and jokes about wage cuts for city employees if a mayoral candidate proposes such economy, but argues it would not boost efficiency.
A fragmentary verse recalling a seaside day with strawberries and a breeze along links. The speaker notes August feeling like May, wind and tides, and a shadowy sail nearby as lovers seek refreshment.
Fragmentary lines evoke a lyric scene with wandering imagery. Mentions of the end of June and the young year setting suggest seasonal mood shifts. The text juxtaposes ships, bees, and grass in a dreamy, unsettled meditation on time and nature.
In a close-knit apartment world, Elsie longs for connection as Katie plans a birthday spread. A party guest, Ladd McCulloch, arrives by chance, sparking a quiet romance by the fire. Elsie learns of an upcoming farewell trip as their bond grows amid friends and distractions.
Kiwanis members hosted mothers at a Friday luncheon in the Gunter Hotel ballroom. President Nat Washer introduced Mrs Tolunia Steves who spoke as a mother and honored others with roses. Mayor Dell and City officials attended as a chorus of appreciations and a celebration of Mother's Day with local civic leaders planning a San Antonio University event next week.
Rabbi Sidhey Yedesche urged improving boy education and family duty at a Rotary Club luncheon in San Antonio. He cited lack of gymnasiums and few male teachers, calling for citywide responsibility and community cooperation, with data from a recent YMCA led survey. Judge Cly honored mothers. Capt Edwin McManus urged interest in the National Guard.
A long OCR fragment lists vaudeville acts at multiple venues in different cities and a string of corporate filings in Texas. It mentions Grant Prutrios and Loew theaters with acts like Two Sports from Michigan, Cherles Ray in 3 Minutes, and many capital stock figures and incorporators for companies such as Master Oil & Gas Co Amarillo and Yaney-Richardson Triplement Co San Angelo.
A Cockney soldier and a Plymouth native spar over worth and wit on Plymouth bridge. A temperance sermon prompts a joke about liquor’s misery. A tailor measures a stout customer with a joke of slipping behind a lady. A manager misreads authority in a telegram. A judge punningly taxes a gun case with “ten dollars and costs” and an angel. Miscellany of humor and miscopy closes the page.
