Saigon Battle Expands On City Edge Amid Tet Fighting
Reports from Saigon describe heavy clashes along the northeastern outskirts near Tan Son Nhut and the Phu Tho race track as U.S. and South Vietnamese forces contest Viet Cong momentum. American casualties include 14 wounded and one helicopter crewman killed, with four journalists killed and several wounded. The fighting centers on open terrain near the cemetery and Tho race track, where enemy forces attacked from bridges and outskirts, while Bao Tri and Tan Son Nhut bases faced rocket and mortar barrages. A Vietnamese survivor testified to mass executions by Viet Cong of captured soldiers, police, and militiamen in the Mekong Delta area, with 30 corpses found and authorities continuing investigations.
