New Cardinals Visit Vatican City
Thirty three new cardinals accepted their Rome parishes as Pope Paul VI installed them in a ceremony that expanded the College of Cardinals to 136 from 43 nations. Cardinal Terence J. Cooke of New York received St John and St Paul Basilica, while Cardinal John J. Wright of Pittsburgh took Jesus the Divine Master, and others—John F. Dearden of Detroit and John J. Carberry of St. Louis—were assigned historic and modern churches. The event followed the St Peter's Basilica installation attended by 30,000 dignitaries and marked liberalizing signals amid Vatican debates on priestly celibacy and doctrinal governance. Cardinal Jean Villot of France was named Secretary of State, signaling a potential shift in Vatican policy.
