Confederate Memorial Day Observed in Columbus
Special to The Light Columbus Georgia March 26 On April 24 the memory of the Confederate dead will be honored at the place where the first memorial service was held almost forty two years ago. The movement to decorate graves on a set spring day and pay tribute to Confederate valor originated with Linzie Rutherford Elis and Mrs M Williams whose letters urged similar gatherings across the south. The first exercises were at St Luke Methodist church in 1866 and Memorial Day is again suggested to be held there as the Souths Sabbath with services led by local officials and women’s groups continuing the tradition in southern states.
