Navy data reports Vanguard I lifted smoothly from the launch pad and rose to about a mile in ten seconds before veering southeast. The first stage exploded on the pad and the second flew 57 seconds, reaching 20,000 feet before failure. Army Jupiter-C tests previously set a 650-mile record with the first U.S. earth satellite.
Washington reports the Navy Vanguard rocket achieved a successful orbit with a 21 pound satellite circling the globe every 135 minutes. Third stage debris is visible. two transmitters function, one solar powered, with expected long life. Officials note launch proceeded smoothly despite a brief delay to avoid radio interference with Explorer satellite.
A Cleburne housewife filed a will contest claiming common law marriage to late Oilman J B Sexton and paternity of her daughter. A second contest was filed by Sexton’s sister and nieces. Both seek to divide or challenge a fortune estimated between three thousand and sixty million dollars.
An organization plans a meeting at the Milton hotel in Hu on Tuesday to form a civic committee on law enforcement facilities. Backed by businessmen and former grand druids, the group aims to press San Antonio’s need for improved facilities and will seek insights from sheriffs police officials and other sources on practical requirements. A general committee will be formed at the Tuesday session to begin coordinated efforts.

Second stage with 7500 pound thrust and complex guidance aimed for 130 miles altitude before coast. Third stage fired near 18000 mph to achieve orbit as guidance spins for stability. Final coast and postburns aimed toward equatorial orbit with satellite.
The United States plans a satellite launch toward the moon this year. Army Secretary Brucker said the defense department’s advance research agency has definite plans for an orbital attempt, likely not soon but within months. General Schriever noted missiles could place a TV satellite in lunar orbit for unmanned reconnaissance.
