Civil War Veteran General John Salling Dies at 112
General John Salling, 112, a surviving Civil War veteran, died of pneumonia and old age near Staut, Virginia. His daughter Mrs. Hugh McCamy and grandson Hawkins were with him. Salling had enjoyed health after his 110th birthday, but influenza and pneumonia led to his coma and death. Walter Williams of Houston remains the last known Union veteran. Salling’s passing marks the loss of a centenarian Confederate veteran long noted for vigor and memory of the War Between the States.
