A chorus from the Phyllis Wheatley Negro High School will perform songs of the Old South as part of the regular weekly entertainment for visitors at the Tourist Club located at 617 North St Mary's Street. The event is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday.
Wind driven snow clogs highways in Northern Wisconsin and parts of Upper Michigan, isolating communities as nearly a foot falls in Superior and Douglas counties. Iron River area sees eight inches. plows make little headway. Buses canceled, trains halted north of Manitowoc and Antigo, leaving Iron County students home. Troop School note: Three Hundred Fifteenth Medical Regiment to meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the Nix Professional Building recreation room.
Teo Lew building inspectors Tom Connors and Frank Wald were appointed by Fire and Police Commissioner Phil Wright to boost enforcement of the zoning ordinance. Each will be paid 125 a month and begin work Thursday. The move follows complaints by the zoning commission and chamber of commerce that enforcement was weak under Chaves Fincham, the city building inspector, who said staff size limited inspections. The department now has four inspectors and will inspect all structures before occupancy certificates are issued.
Tulsa mourns prominent oil figure Catlett who died here on Wednesday. Funeral services will be held in Tulsa on Thursday. Catlett was widely known in oil circles and connected with Texas energy interests.

Police say ransom demands were sent via hotel staff and implied threats to cancel a Sunday broadcast.
Eighth San Antonio girls will be featured in the Texas State College for Women's choral and symphony concert. The program includes violin, flute, string bass and cello solos performed by billed soloists Billig, Jean Lockhart, Edna Dabney and Ruth Adele Koenig, under W. Gibson Walters with John Murray Kendrick directing voices. A 350 member choir includes Mauzine Fried rich, Virginia Holbed, Ruth Ann Stephens and Catherine Merchant.
Smithville wins district site for one act play and tennis tournament events set for April. District 24 selects Smithville with J B Mitchell overseeing athletics. Eight counties represented include Lee Fryuble Bas rop Caldwell Gonzales Austin Colorado and Lavach. Wichita Falls reports a sharp temperature drop from 90s to around 30 degrees with weather officials issuing updates.
Government and the agriculture department consider a plan to use Federal Surplus Commodities funds to pay premiums to farmer-borrowers to redeem loan cotton and sell it. The plan also proposes using the funds for bounties to exporters to compete in world markets. Textile reps in Britain and Europe said they faced shortages, and Secretary Wallace said government cotton would be priced competitively for foreign buyers. Domestic and export stocks totaled 15,627,000 bales with 11,950,000 locked by loans, leaving 407,900 bales for use until a new start in August.
