Conservation League Rates Muskie and Others on Environment
The League of Conservation Voters gave President Nixon a luke-warm score for mid-1971, praising Muskie as the candidate most committed to pollution cleanup along with Jackson. High marks went to McGovern and McCluskey, while Jackson faced criticism for supporting the SST and the Alaskan pipeline. The group did not endorse but rated candidates on environmental actions, noting Nixon’s early EPA creation but later perceived reduced commitment due to costs and political cost with business interests.
