War Department to withhold home addresses of war dead
Washington officials indicate a shift to notify relatives publicly while withholding home addresses of soldiers killed or wounded. The War Department argues that publishing full casualty lists betrays military secrets and would flood newspapers with dispersed, uncoordinated names, making identification dangerous and impractical. Relatives would be notified officially, but local papers may publish names, risking misidentification in large cities.

War department faces growing task of casualty notices
Officials rely on official telegrams to relatives for the news while Congress debates explanations. Senator Newett Indiana has a Senate resolution seeking the department's explanation as lists remain under a hundred names daily. With more American troops engaged, transmitting casualty lists without identifiers will grow harder as Pershing's absence delays the daily list.
