A zoning ordinance will be drawn up and submitted to Mayor G. K. Quin sna Ube city commission about April 8. Nat Goldsmith, chairman of the city zoning committee, said Wednesday. City engineers were preparing up-to-date maps for the committee survey. H. J. Wilson, coordinating engineer for the WPA, will be in charge of zoning work.
Commerce department officials announced the retirement of Joseph B. Weaver this week as chief of the marine inspection and navigation bureau. Weaver entered the bureau in 1934 and said he would quit after completing his program. future plans were not disclosed.
Special 19 The Light reports a March 10 scene in Austin where W. B. Carlson of San Antonio led the gav e during a playful but noisy initiation of new legislators. Members used electric desk buttons and hand signals to record votes amid a session of lively procedural antics and contested points.
The Rev J A Swig led the YMCA Camera Club meeting of the 40 A.W.M. department with J A Jordan elected secretary at the Tuesday session. Nathan spoke on camera mechanics and related topics during the gathering at the Wal.
Austin dispatch notes Governor James V. Allred of Texas joining other state leaders in telegraph exchanges over a proposed inspection tax of cents a pound on Texas cottonseed oil used for shortening. The Iowa levy under consideration would ban substitutes like hog lard and alternative oils, affecting soy bean oil peanut oil and cottonseed oil used in the South.
An underground sitdown strike by 450 tunnel workers halted 62 miles of tracks and warehouses under Chicago. Clad in heavy gear due to cold, 50 motormen and 400 eight handlers blocked operations, barricading doors while relatives ferried food to sitters. Police fired shots, nine drivers arrested as violence rose amid six day taxi strikes.
Benjamin R. Howell, 40, ex soldier, was charged in federal court with re entering Fort Sam Houston after being told to leave. He was arraigned before United States Commissioner Y A Tockhart and bond set at $500. Howell was discharged from the Ninth Infantry on April 2, 1995, per arresting officers.
