Three state penitentiary prisoners from the San Antonio area counties received conditional pardons from Governor Jester. L. D. Nichols, five years for burglary across Bexar Gillespie and Kendall counties on Oct 2 1945. Celestine Quiroga, five years for rape from Atascosa county on Apr 3 1946. Jose L. Rodriguez, 25 years for murder in Bee county on Dec 29 1942. Rodriguez and Quiroga had been reprieved previously. Jester also pardoned additional long-term prisoners.

City Attorney T. D. Cobb ruled that 18 year olds may be appointed to the fire and police forces, amid charter and civil service act conflicts. The civil service commission then opened examinations from March 3 to 18 as Fire Chief Hart cited 12 firemen and eight police vacancies. Fire at Stinson Field causes apartment blaze

Damage estimated at 1500 by the fire department following a blast Friday at 414 Cadmus St. Stinson Held. The fire started in the kitchen of an apartment occupied by W. F. Kennedy, caused by leaking gas during a gas range installation. Building damage reached 7500 and contents 31000 as firemen contained the spread.

Dismal River Search for Natchez Crew Continues

A grim search stretched along the Mississippi River at Greenville for the master and 10 crew members of the towboat Natchez, missing since the vessel sank Thursday night. Thirteen of the twenty crew survived. two others were recovered from the water but died of injuries.
