Trial Set in Ambush Base Murder Case
Edgar McDonald alias Hid Wilson faces trial in the Ninety-fourth District Court for the ambush murder of Deputy Sheriff George Mangold on September 18. He is the third defendant to be tried, following Joel Demack who received life imprisonment and Eugene Hanspach who was convicted and sentenced to 300 years. Demack testified he fired the fatal shot during a burglary investigation at a Handy Andy store on Culebra Road. McDonald’s attorney, T. B. Simmons, subpoenaed Demack as a witness and will bring him from a state penitentiary at Suntsville under guard. Mangold was shot in the abdomen as he pursued the burglars.

Former County Clerk Recovers From His Wound
Tack R. Burke former county clerk has recovered from a self-inflicted throat wound and is discharged from Station hospital Fort Sam Houston. He was found December 29 at a local tourist camp with a butcher knife wound. Burke’s attorney L W Schlesinger says Burke faces indictment for misappropriation of official funds during his term and will be transferred to a veterans hospital in Galveston for further treatment after a physical exam. A veterans bureau official denied the transfer and noted no discharge records had been received. A three-pump filing station and shop are for sale at a reasonable price.
