Frontier Days of Texas Bowie Expedition at San Saba
In late October 1831 James Bowie returns to San Antonio from New Orleans and leads an expedition with Resin P. Bowie David Buchanan and others toward the San Saba gold mines. On November 2 they clash with 164 Comanches and allies, Bowie’s men hold strategic ground, dueling severe casualties on both sides, and the party fights off a grass fire until dawn, then retreats toward San Antonio after eight days of battle backed by a fortified breastwork built by the wounded and their comrades.
