Time Deposit Rate Hike Is Authorized
Washington AP The Federal Home Loan Bank Board authorized savings and loan associations nationwide to pay up to a specified percent interest on certain time deposits. The move followed a Federal Reserve Board step to ease the rate war between banks and thrifts by imposing moderate limits on certificates of deposit. Board Chairman John E Horne said the action was minimal but decisive. Horne noted a two day meeting with 12 Home Loan bank presidents prior to the decision. Beginning July 1 associations may issue six month savings certificates with a minimum $1,000 denomination at a fixed annual rate, without losing the right to borrow from the system.
