Med School Suffers Minority Funding Shortfall, Texas Medical School Lags
The University of Texas Medical School at San Antonio told the Bexar County Hospital District board that inadequate scholarship and loan funds hinder minority recruitment. Only 122 of 241 accepted minority applicants can enter the next freshman class, with 3 Mexican Americans and 10 Black students. Federal funds and alumni support are limited as competing schools offer larger scholarships. The board also addressed union recognition for 241 district employees and approved a $24,991 contract for a new helicopter pad to relocate wind currents away from VA hospital construction. May district income totaled $912,902, within budget bounds compared to April and last May.
