In Jacksonville on June 24, 61-year-old Fred P Cone, a Lake City banker, farmer and lawyer, won the Democratic nomination for Florida governor after a runoff. Unofficial returns show Cone leading with about 172,589 votes to Judge Raleigh Petteway’s 119,936 from 1243 of 1322 precincts, with Petteway the lead in the primary field of 14 candidates.
The Rev. Msgr. Mariano Garriga, pastor of St. Cecelia's for 16 years, was named co adjutor to the bishop of the Corpus Christi diocese by Pope Pius XI. He will assist Bishop Emmanuel Ledvina with right of succession and return to his native diocese. Garriga, born in Port Isabel, serves a 22,291 square mile area with 140,084 church members in 1935, 62 churches and 32 missions.

Austin dispatch reports the death of guard Hugh Lancaster at the State Hospital for the Insane after a JuneMonday attack by a berserk male patient in the dining hall. Other guards restrained the assailant. The incident highlights violent disturbance at the facility.
