Directors of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association opened their annual meeting in Oklahoma City. They discussed control of hoof and mouth disease should it spread into the county and other key topics for the oldest and largest beef stock group in the world.
The city council authorized Mayor Alfred Callaghan to renew the control tower lease with the CAA. The city will receive 200 monthly. A second lease with Western Aero Supply for two quonset warehouses under construction at the municipal airport was approved for 200 monthly. The city will also lease storage space at Stinson field for a federal maintenance technician for 25 monthly.
Proponents of a one million dollar measure to let the state seize the San Antonio arsenal property for a medical school remain hopeful Governor Jester will sign. Chamber officials report the bill not dead before June 26 and note certification by the state comptroller may be required to show funds. A delegation led by Alex Thomas cites broad support from state officials including Price Daniel and the comptroller office chief clerk Robert Calvert, who said funding efforts would be pursued.
Judge W. W. McCrory in Criminal District Court Thursday handed down suspended sentences after guilty verdicts for Sammie J. Matthews Edward Medel Lin Wyenne Adams and Ale s Garein charged with burglary with intent to commit shell charges.
Election officials announced that voting will occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in the Los Angeles Heights school election. H. C. Bain, business manager of the district, said the bond issue seeks $350,000 for school buildings, improvements, and additions, and would raise the school tax ceiling from $1 to $1.25.
Col. Robert G. Boyd of 700 Wiltshire Avenue has been nominated by President Truman for promotion to brigadier general in the officers reserve corps.
Congressional leaders denounced large shipments of oil and gasoline from U S ports to Russia as American forces faced fuel shortages. Senator Gurney, chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, criticized the administration for allowing Russian tankers to supply heavy consignments as the U S Navy curtails operations.
