B52s shift from strategic to conventional warfare role

Washington report details how the B52 stratofortress, once famed for nuclear delivery, is being retrained for conventional bombing in limited wars. Strategic Air Command crews practice nonnuclear missions, with tests showing the bomber can strike any target with conventional bombs. Two squadrons will be phased out as emphasis moves from mass nuclear retaliation to conventional warfare preparedness.

Wilson Heads Peace Mission Effort at Commonwealth Meet
