Steve Matthews arrived as Lubbock city manager and toured City Hall with Councilman Crumline. He emphasized human relations, said managers must stay calm and fair, and met department heads including Finance Director Cy Aldridge and City Attorney Carlos Cadena while noting the heat and air conditions in offices.
An expert team led by Paul Red Adair arrived from Houston to move 400 pounds of explosives to the center of a blazing natural gas well in Renovo Pa to cap the well. Adair said it could take a week to recap after the capping valve blew off and gas erupted in flames injuring ten men, one seriously.
