A radio broadcast from Hanoi said the Viet Cong would execute American prisoners in retaliation if three Viet Cong patriots were executed by the South Vietnamese government. The broadcast claimed the three were sentenced to death at a Sai Gon military tribunal on May 29, naming no individuals. Saigon records show only one death sentence from that hearing.
Deputy press secretary Bob Fleming said President Johnson will depart Washington late today for a weekend in Texas. He will attend a duty and ball hosted by the President's Club with $1,000 contributors to the Democratic party.
In Florence County near Timmonsville, three children lost their lives while blackberry picking near an irrigation pond. A girl fell in and her sister and a playmate attempted rescue, all three drowned. Victims were Vickie Carter 10 Denise Carter 12 and Eddie Kirkland 11, all of Timmonsville.
