Rail rate hearing recessed as Texas plans cotton tax
The Texas Railroad Commission recessed hearings on common carrier oil pipe rates to June 16. The plan ties taxes on competing imports to cotton and wheat products to fund acreage reduction. Cotton acreage cuts target about 40 million acres with $6 per acre rentals and options on 2.5 million bales of government cotton. Wheat would face a 30 cent per bushel tax to raise about 150 million dollars for farm programs. A domestic allotment plan pays bonuses to growers who reduce acreage, with winter wheat planting starting in August. Washington discusses profits and timing as farm officials push to retain current plans amid market reactions.
