Washington June 14 pressures mounted on both sides of the soft coal contract talks with barely three weeks left to avert a nationwide strike. The present wage pact expires June 30 but an industry wide vacation to July 5 sets the actual deadline for which John L Lewis and the operators are working. Bargainers were to resume efforts this afternoon.
Cincinnati June 14 Ella B Myers of New York was named Advertising Woman of the Year by the Council of Women's Advertising Clubs of the Advertising Federation of America. She received a silver pin from Greta Culp Hobby executive vice president of the Houston Post. Myers is a special advertising consultant and sponsor of the Institute of Professional Relations. The award was presented this year for the first time.
Washington June 14 The House dropped the so called red rider from a treasury post office appropriation bill and sent the 248 414 255 measure to President Truman The rider added earlier would have barred treasury post office funds from paying the salaries of any union member whose officers have not met the Taft Hartley act non Communist provisions The Senate had removed the rider prior to this action.
Calico the cat on Truman Frey's farm near Waco has four newborn kittens that are adopted by Queenie the cocker spaniel with her four new puppies. Calico offers no objections as the animals share a box.
Kerrville June 14. Rev Henry Getz of St Peters Episcopal church Kerrville will attend the Provincial Youth conference June 27 at the Oklahoma College for Women Chickasha Oklahoma. Getz is chairman of the youth commission of the Episcopal Diocese of west Texas.
