Texas Pioneer William Van Hoogenhuyze’s 48 Years on the Road
William Van Hoogenhuyze, a Texas groceries veteran and founder of the Van Hoogenhuyze Grocery firm, recounts 48 years of sales by horse, buggy, and later wagon through West Texas towns. Born in England and arriving in 1886, he prides himself on hard work and avoiding trouble, with a memorable 10,000 dollar wholesale sale during a flood in a West Texas town. He now travels three days a week to meet customers, lamenting modern quick contacts and cherishing cracker-barrel discussions.
