A notice reports that Lieutenant Franklin D Roosevelt arrived in Britain on official business for the United States Navy. The arrival was announced today, detailing the wartime diplomatic and military context of the visit.
Washington reports high level diplomatic sources say Germany threatened to seize all of France and withhold 1,500,000 French war prisoners unless France joined the Axis. Petain reportedly resists while Laval or Darlan may push for closer collaboration. the French fleet would scuttle its ships if Germany moved. Page Four.
London reports mark the second anniversary of Italy’s entry into the war with signs of Fascist unraveling. Mussolini’s purge of the party has expelled about thirty thousand members, described as anti-German or disloyal, amidst official satisfaction at the regime’s persistence under Hitlerism.
Associate Justice Frank Murphy to swap robes for khaki to serve four months in field training at Fort Benning Georgia. He will take oath at the War Department and report to General Marshall, remaining in service for the duration with the Supreme Court seat temporarily filled.

Houston report three workers were struck by a length of pipe hurled by an oil well blast. Killed were W. R. Nuckols of Sealy and W. G. Atwell of Opelousas La. Heston G. Howard of Beaumont sustained an arm injury. The blast occurred yesterday at the oil well site.
In Vichy on June 10, reports said about three thousand people attended the funeral of an RAF airman shot down off the French coast and given military honors by the Germans at St Malo earlier in the week.
President Roosevelt outlines a plan to avert a nationwide rubber shortage affecting 45 million households. A Senate group suggests 30 million tires can be relocated using 85,000 tons of reclaimed and 3,600 tons of crude rubber, enough to keep 20 million cars operational. Disclosure of materials ahead of a Tarlo Address sparked concern about wartime secrecy.
A WPB report shows the United States has spent over 40 billion dollars and obligated about 76 billion more for war and defense since mid-1940. Peter Krug testified in a federal grand jury in Detroit in the case of Max Stephan a German born restaurateur accused of aiding him after escaping from a Canadian prison camp Krug was captured in San Antonio and moved from Detroit to Chicago then to the southwest en route to Mexico with unknown plans

City seeks eminent domain against the San Antonio Public Service Company to supply electricity gas and transit. Three commissioners will review evidence and report findings as Mayor Quin plans a $35 million offer to American Light and Traction while river authority discussions delay. A separate Red River rise report notes 2.1 inches of rain in 24 hours bringing water to 2 feet at Denison.
Reported British and Free French forces repulsed an Axis assault near Bir Hacheim in southern Libya. The commu nique said enemy tanks dive bombers and infantry were repelled as RAF patrols bombed targets from Gandta to Taranto and Crete. Five Me Bf fighters were downed in air battles.
Allied airmen claimed 13 enemy fighters destroyed or damaged in a June operation over New Guinea and Timor, while losing two Allied aircraft. A submarine attack against an Allied vessel off the southeast coast failed. Fires sweeping the Lae Salamaian area were noted.
The State Supreme court ruled that Walter Byserynski, 90, became insane after an auto crash in Manchester on April 42, 1940. He was admitted to Norwich State hospital and will stay for life. Also reported: railroad man Frank Frinks, 77, of Austin, died in an Austin railroad-related death.
German troops pressed deeper into Sevastopol during a sixth day of furious bombardment and ground fighting near the Crimean fortress. Soviet dispatches claimed no Soviet lines were yielded though Red Star noted infantry penetration toward a rail area as defense batteries reportedly halted a German infantry regiment, destroyed tanks and planes, and inflicted heavy losses.
Navy denies Axis claim of Japanese landings on the Aleutian Islands off Alaska. Reports list U S sinking or damaging 16 to 18 Japanese warships, including carriers, while Tokyo claims substantial Allied losses. An eye witness from Tokyo described Japanese forces attacking Dutch Harbor areas as naval action continues in the Aleutians.
