Balloon Heads West Above Texas and Mexico
A navy cosmic ray balloon, the world’s largest, rose from Brunswick Georgia and drifted over San Antonio, Texas, then toward El Paso and Mexico. Tracking teams feared a late descent. the 5500-pound gondola carried 500 nuclear emulsion sheets and a 59,000 dollar payload. The balloon stayed aloft at high altitude, setting records for duration and height and complicating recovery plans with a slow eastward to westward drift and potential overflight of Mexico.
