Washington June 8 UP Squadron Taft aged 70 said the senate may act this week on legislation to raise the pay of government workers. Also a prompt pointer to Pocahontas and Captain Smith and a comic feature in Puck The Wale Weekly.
The Christian Science board urged members to defend free government. At the annual meeting the directors stated free government deserves active defense of its sacred purpose along with outward allegiance. Harry C. Browne of Boston was elected president, succeeding Helen Challe Elwell. He told delegates that success of any organization or government rests on the spiritual efficiency of its governing instrument.
New York June 8 Union leader Joseph Curran president of the CIO National Maritime Union left a hall under police escort after a noisy meeting of about 3206 tanker crew members. The session aimed to ratify a contract with US tanker companies but ended without a vote amid protesters hurling pennies over objections to the pay raise. Curran exited the hall with the escort following the turbulent scene.
Austin June 5. Twelve directors of the State Bar of Texas were elected yesterday. They included Cecil E Burne Corpus Christi Fourteenth District Bismark Pope Laredo Jague Del Rio Twenty first district all elected to two year terms.
Washington reports the Hearst papers push for aged pensions for war widows and orphans and aid to wives and children of seriously disabled veterans. Legislation would boost monthly pensions for widows and orphans of World War II veterans and extend dependency allowances to disabled wartime and peacetime veterans, with Senate Finance favoring passage.
Amon G. Carter Foundation announces a life size bronze statue of Will Rogers on his horse Soapsuds gifted to Texas Technological College. The equestrian piece, offered to honor the famed humorist and alumnus, was revealed today.
